We believe that a student's self-esteem is enhanced by positive relationships with supportive adults. Becoming a volunteer is a fabulous way to make a difference in a child's life.

Hands On Work

There are also numerous opportunities for those who like to work from the sidelines. Yellowstone Academy has a guild that provides many volunteer services for special projects and events such as holiday celebrations.

Shepherd A Child

Students at Yellowstone Academy will receive a first class education, but we also want them to learn responsibility, character, and self-reliance. One of the best ways to make this happen is for a mentor or shepherd to invest time, guidance, and love in a child.

The Shepherd-A-Child Program is administered in cooperation with Houston churches. You must be an active member of a local Christian church in order to be a shepherd. Our goal is for each child at Yellowstone Academy to be matched with an individual or family who will connect with that child in a positive way and play a role in educational and social enrichment.

Shepherds will commit to meeting with their child at least once a month during the school year. The visit may entail something as simple as going out for a meal or to the park, or may include a trip to the museum, a sporting event, or one's place of business. The goal is to show our children a larger slice of the world they live in.

Shepherds help introduce Yellowstone kids

to the larger world around them.

Jump Drives: Our 4th-7th grade computer classes will use these jump drives to save their work without congesting the hard drive with their documents. Prepackaged Snacks: All of our students from PK 3 - 7th grade will be in school from 7:45 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. We need donations of pre-packaged snacks that can be served to our students in the mid-afternoon. Suggestions are peanut butter or cheese crackers, trail mix, nuts, pretzels, goldfish or wheat thin crackers, or animal crackers. Items for Conduct Store: At each grade level, PK3 - 7th grade, our students earn conduct points throughout the day and spend these weekly to purchase items from a school store. Suggestions: small toys, school supplies, coin or change purses, decorative spiral notebooks, colorful stationary, fun pencils and pens, hair accessories, children's inexpensive watches, socks alarm clocks, art supplies, purses, back packs, wallets, small pieces of candy - excluding hard candy and gum (No toy guns, please)...

Meet Yellowstone's New Principal

Les Csorba, Chairman of the Board of Directors, recently announced that Yellowstone Academy has hired its first full-time principal, Cherie Singleton. Cherie brings to Yellowstone over 30 years of educational experience, including 17 years of leadership with at-risk students. She has served as a high school teacher, high school administrator, middle school administrator, and most recently as the Principal of Rowland Elementary Magnet School in the Victoria Independent School district. Cherie holds degrees from North Texas State University and Prairie View A & M University and is the married mother of two grown sons.

Cherie is a life-long learner and enjoys the daily challenge of teaching students. She is always looking for innovative ways to improve student academic performance and has enjoyed working with students from low income families. “Having the opportunity to bring in Christian education to these students is even more rewarding and gratifying.” Cherie is excited about having the opportunity "to teach students about the love of God in their lives.” Please come by and meet Cherie Singleton. Meet Natasha Ford Natasha Ford is the lead PreK-3 teacher sharing a classroom with Kortnie Powe. Natasha graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 2001 with a degree in psychology and a sociology minor. She has worked as an associate teacher for HISD and as a GED/ESL instructor for Houston Community College and volunteered in public school classrooms for several years. Natasha is in her fourth year of teaching at Yellowstone and has enjoyed each year more and more. Meet Kortnie Powe Kortnie Powe is a PreK-3 aid in the classroom with Natasha Ford. Kortnie is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree and is in her second year at Yellowstone Academy. She says she enjoys working at Yellowstone because it provides me an opportunity to give back to the community in which I was raised. For the 2010/11 academic year, Yellowstone will require approximately 15-20 desktop computers to further the education of our children. The total estimated cost per computer is $1,550. It will also be necessary to replace the server. The cost will be $5,000.

Goodman Financial Corporation Earlier this year, the development office received an unexpected phone call from Steve Goodman of Goodman Financial Corporation. Steve's firm is a money manager for the Fred & Mabel Parks Foundation and had heard wonderful things about the school from Jim McClellan, the Foundation's President. Steve's company donates 20% of its fees from its foundation clients to a cause its client supports. Yellowstone had just formed its first basketball team and its first dance team. Both groups were lacking uniforms...;..until the phone rang. Goodman Financial Corporation provided the funds for both group's uniforms, and you could see the students' self-esteem rise as they put the uniforms on for the very first time. Yellowstone Yesterday: Yellowstone Academy is a non-profit organization formed in July 2001 for the purpose of establishing a high quality faith-based private school for students living in poverty. A Board of Directors was formed, and Kim Hansen was hired as Executive Director. Kim immediately commenced a year-long project to research the concept and formulate specific plans for the school. During that year, she visited 12 inner city private schools in various cities around the country to observe their programs and to develop an understanding of “best practices” for educating children in poverty. After a year of intensive planning, Yellowstone Academy was created. The school opened in August 2002 with sixty-four 3 and 4 year old students from Houston’s Third Ward. Yellowstone Academy Guild
Mission Statement

The Yellowstone Academy Guild was formed in 2003 as a support group for the students, faculty and families of the Yellowstone Academy. The Guild members plan and host class parties, provide teacher appreciation luncheons, chaperone field trips and volunteer as needed for other school related activities. The Guild raises funds with membership dues and the Annual Luncheon. Funds raised are used to provide class parties, uniforms, field trips and general operating expenses not covered in the school’s annual budget.
